Crank it!

Tonight is Earth Hour! At 8:30 tonight turn off your lights to make a difference in the world's energy consumption. We'll be hanging out with some hippies and learning about raw food while enjoying a raw food candlelit dinner. So, crank off those unnecessary electrics and take life a little slower.

Cruisers

So the world's largest ocean liner visited Fremantle over the weekend and I have to say THAT"S A BIG BOAT! Heather and I were sleeping and wanted to wake up at 8:30am to see its arrival at the scheduled time of 8:40am. The Queen Mary 2 blew its foghorn at about 5:45am and I nearly peed the bed. Reports say you can hear her horn for 16 kilometers. Considering we're not even a kilometer from the harbour, it was quite loud. During the day the passengers filled the junk shops around town with their fanny-packs and knee high socks w/ birkenstocks. Some of those 4,000 cruise passengers decided to ride the train back to Fremantle from a visit to Perth. Out for a long distance bike ride we chose to catch the train home. Unbeknownst to us, the trains were packed with the cruisers leaving very little room for us and our bikes. Don't worry there weren't any casualties. Well, I did hit an old asian lady. BUT SHE WAS ASKING FOR IT! Haha The QM2 stopped in our fair town as part of its 'round the world tour. Tickets for this journey start at 19k a person for an inside room. (no windows) Not bad! If you consider the cost of flying to all of the stops, food, lodging, and souvies 19k isn't that much. Yeah, I factored in souvies. How can you travel anywhere and not buy at least a postcard or two?! (or 20 in my case!)

Happy Travels.

Survey

We named our wireless network "Boss Hog". I wonder how many people attempting to steal our connection are fans of the Duke boys?

Pink Sharpie

So today on the bus I came across something brand new to me: A hitchhiker's sign. Standing at the bus stop were two French backpackers waiting for the bus to arrive. I didn't really pay that much attention to them considering I too was waiting for the bus and had adopted a slacking posture while staring off into the distance. We boarded the bus and I took my seat. Looking towards the front of the bus I saw one of the backpackers digging through his pockets looking for change. His packs were piled at the door keeping would-be passengers standing outside frying in the afternoon sunlight. His lady friend (I didn't know the extent of their relationship prior to this event, sorry.) got up to remove the bags from the doorway. With the bags she brought back a rectangular piece of cardboard. On it was written "BUNBURY" and below it "Thanks :)" Yeah she used an emoticon on her hitchhiking sign. I'd only ever seen those signs in movies and on tv. I'll admit her handwriting and use of a pink Sharpie would certainly indicate that she wasn't crazy..or would it? I dunno. They looked like a couple of decent kids to me. But why the "Thanks" on the board? Was she already thanking her ride for the trip they were about to share? I was a little confused at this gesture. I suppose no matter what your hitchhiking signs says, anything that doesn't say you're a crazy escaped mental patient with a love for sharing is well worth the pink Sharpie.

Wineglass Bay in Tasmania. Beautiful, right? Yeah this place is way too beautiful if ya tell me. Tasmania makes me so mad because everywhere you look is beautiful countryside and cute little historic villages that can just make you stay forever and ever. I dream of just disappearing there and never returning. Running a small farm and disappearing.

Uploaded some new photos today from our trip to Wineglass Bay in Tasmania. We camped right off the sand and found ourselves in the middle of nowhere with literally the world's most beautiful beach outside our tent. Check out all the photos @ Flickr by searching for loaded.chilidog

WATCH OUT FOR THAT KANGAROO!!!

Smelly

I wonder if the people on the bus knew I was carrying a bag of cow manure? You'd probably say they did because of the smell. No. Some passengers smell worse than the manure thereby masking the odor. Thank you stinky bums.

Strangeness.

Ugh. Laundry day. It wouldn't be so bad if i didn't have to ride the elevator 8 floors down and avoid the weird guy who always tells me "Happy New Year!"

Hope you're all hanging in there.

Barista Bums

Downtown Fremantle on a friday afternoon and the cafes are buzzing. Smartly dressed businessmen mingle with beachbums and locals out for a coffee in the warm summer air. Schoolkids are darting around the tables trying to find their friends. A couple reunites with a hug. I'm settling into a cool mocha at a table in the shade. Watching the cafe scene has monopolized my attention. I suppose my book can wait.

Mobile Creativity

I just downloaded a mobile blogging app for my phone therefore taking this whole thing to a new level. I can sit in a cafe, ride the train across the city, or even not get up from the couch to reach my laptop and still make a post. Genius.

Home is where you have an internet connection.

This past weekend we moved into our apartment in Fremantle. WOO-HOO! Yes, finally we have a space to ourselves, albeit a smal one, but it provides everything we need and not much else. hehe I've taken some pics but seeing as how we just got our internet hooked up I need to spend some time online reading useless blogs and facebooking. (Is that even a word? I've seen it used before but I hate turning nouns into verbs.) Right now half of the apartment is organized and the other half looks like a an explosion went off.
Tuesday was Australia Day and for those of you who don't celebrate it, shame on you. Mark your Google Calendar for next year.

That is all.

So Close.

The beginning is almost here. We're just a few days away from moving into our new apartment in Fremantle. I'm very excited to move in and finally settle down. Renting this room has been convenient and everything, but I'm still living out of the suitcases and trying my hardest to not make too much noise.
The job hunting has been going well I suppose. No leads yet.
I've been reading Guns, Germs, and Steel. This book is blowing my mind! (Especially the chapter on Almonds.)

We're Back!

Its Saturday January 9th and I'm coming to you from Perth, Australia! We arrived about 5 days ago and have been getting our new life together ever since. We're renting a room for the moment while we apartment hunt (which is going pretty well) and hoping to get ol' Bruce a job soon. Its summertime here in Perth which means walk in the shady spots! Until we get internet set up in our new apartment all these updates will be coming from a computer cafe in downtown Perth. A bank of desktops line the walls with people from all over the world trying to play Farmville on Facebook. A few days ago I sat beside a German guy who was watching some ridiculous show on YouTube that looked like a Russian version of "The Office". Needless to say he was laughing his butt off the entire time. I didn't see the humor in it at all. We hope everyone is doing well back home and look here for more updates soon.

Cheers!
